The apostrophe marks a contraction of IT IS. Something that belong to it is ITS.

The [e] runs away like a jewelry thief!
Misspelled as : Jewelery

Judgment
Without the [e] or with it, both are correct. But JUDGMENT is more preferred by American style guides.

Kernel
COLONEL is pronounced identically but KERNEL's vowels are all [e]s!
